Cultivated Garden Theory proposes that the visible, sustained tending of a shared garden can function as a signal of collective care in communities recovering from conflict, violence, or disinvestment.
Developed as an inversion of Wilson and Kelling’s Broken Windows theory, the essay asks what happens when the behavioral cues embedded in our surroundings communicate care rather than neglect, cultivation rather than control. It considers the garden not simply as a symbol of recovery, but as an enactment of it: a community making visible, in the present tense, the future it intends to inhabit.
